Overdues – Gee, you want me to go all the way to my locker? | Wanderings...

An idea for retrieving overdues that's bound to work better than most.

This is a great idea if you can get the district IT staff on board. I used to do this and then they decided they would no longer complete the work orders. No explanation, no warning and on their part, no understanding of what we go through to get library books back!

Ah, but you have the power yourself, right?

We're at a small independent school and our biggest problem is with overdues and copy fees owed at the end of the year. If we don't get books back or fees paid by exams, then it's likely we won't see them again. The yearbook is included in our tuition so we work with the yearbook staff; before the yearbooks are distributed, we give a list of students with overdues to the staff and those books are pulled and given to us. If students want their yearbooks, they have to bring us their books (or pay for the books that they can't find) and settle their fees. We have a 100% return/pay rate! Basically, it's a "we'll give you yours when you give us ours" system!

Good to know another way to persuade students to return books. Thanks, Mrs. O.!
